Was Jesus a Buddhist?

from  www.thezensite.com

http://www.thezensite.com/non_Zen/Was_Jesus_Buddhist.html

A good page filled with interesting ideas. Below is just a small excerpt from the page.

Historical accounts aside, many textual analyses indicate striking similarities between what was said by Jesus and by Buddha and between the prophetic legend of Jesus and ancient Buddhist texts. The conclusion is that, although not identifying himself as a Buddhist for good reasons, Jesus spoke like a Buddhist. The similarities are so striking that, even if no historical evidence existed, we can suspect that Jesus studied Buddhist teachings and that the prophecy and legend of Jesus was derived from Buddhist stories.

(And please understand that this was not posted to offend any of my Christian friends. I only intend to show that there are many similarities between Buddha and Jesus.)

Is Buddhism a religion?

It is neither a religion in the sense in which that word is commonly understood, for it is not "a system of faith and worship owing any allegiance to a supernatural being."http://www.vipassana.com/resources/nutshell_is_it_a_religion.php

My thought for today........

"Animals have these advantages over man: they never hear the clock strike, they die without any idea of death, they have no theologians to instruct them, their last moments are not disturbed by unwelcome and unpleasant ceremonies, their funerals cost them nothing, and no one starts lawsuits over their wills."

Desiderata by Max Ehrmann

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater
and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble,
it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit
to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Dzogchen

Introduction to Dzogchen

http://arobuddhism.org/community/dzogchen.html

Dzogchen is the approach within Buddhism based on recognising our enlightened nature, through meditation. ‘Dzogchen’ in Tibetan means ‘utterly complete’. It is the most complete or inclusive teaching of Buddhism. From the point of view of Dzogchen, we are also each already complete. There is nothing we need to obtain or jettison in order to realise enlightenment. We need only recognise and allow ourselves to be as we actually are. This the path of immediate self-liberation.

praise God, who has many names but the devil has many more and with the love that my mother gave me I'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
there's always someone who'll try to convince you that they know the answer no matter the question be wary of those who believe in a neat little world because it's just fucking crazy, you know that it is
Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh

walking along in this haze of confusion sometimes I can laugh but at times it takes all of my strength just to find enough reason to take the next step step, but I will, but I will, 'til I do
Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh

brother, sister, brothers, sisters brother, sister, brothers, sisters
praise God who has many names but the devil has many more and with the love that my mother gave me I'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
strange evolution, that people have come to believe that we are its greatest achievement when really we're just a collection of cells overrating themselves hello God, I'm avoiding the truth
Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh amana Eh hee yeah amanaya yeaha yeah eh eh

Dave Matthews Band - Dancing Nancies (Live In Central Park)

Could I have been
A parking lot attendant
Could I have been
A millionaire in Bel Air
Could I have been Lost somewhere in Paris
Could I have been
Your little brother
Could I have been
Anyone other than me
Could I have been
Anyone other than me
Could I have been
Anyone other than me
Could I have been
Anyone

He stands touch his hair his shoes untied

Tongue gaping stare
Could I have been a magnet for money?
Could I have been anyone other than me?

Twenty three and so tired of life

Such a shame to throw it all away
The images grow darker still
Could I have been anyone other than me? Then I

Look up at the sky
My mouth is open wide, lick and taste
What's the use in worrying, what's the use in hurrying
Turn, turn we almost become dizzy

I am who I am who I am well who am I
Requesting some enlightenment
Could I have been anyone other than me?

Sing and dance I'll play for you tonight
And thrill at it all

Dark clouds may hang on me sometimes
But I'll work it out then I

Look up at the sky
My mouth is open wide, lick and taste
What's the use in worrying, what's the use in hurrying
Turn, turn we almost become dizzy

Falling out of a world of lies

Could I have been a dancing nancy
A dancing nancy
Could I have been anyone other than me?

And then I sing and dance

Lalala hey, lalala hey, lalala
Sing and dance
Lalala hey, lalala hey, lalala

Sing and dance i play for you tonight, the thrill of it all

Dark clouds may hang on me sometimes but i work it out

Then i, Look up at the sky

My mouth is open wide, lick and taste
What's the use in worrying, what's the use in hurrying
Turn, turn we almost become dizzy
